General Membership Requirements

What masonic status is required?

Membership in good standing in a regular Symbolic Lodge and Royal Arch Chapter is required for membership in a Commandery of Knights Templar.

Must I be invited to join the Commandery?

As a Maser Mason and if a Royal Arch Mason, in good standing, you must have lived within the jurisdiction of the Grand Commandery of Michigan for a period of one year.  You may be invited by a Commandery member, but you are encouraged to apply for membership in the Commandery without awaiting a specific invitation.  You may ask a Commandery friend for a petition form or contact the Recorder (Secretary) for an application, or dowload a petition from this website.

What does it cost to take the Orders of Knighthood?

The cost of securing the three chivalric orders, The Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, Order of Malta, and the Order of the Temple in Detroit Commandery No. 1 Knights Templar is $150.00.

The Detroit Masonic Temple was dedicated on November 25, 1926.  It was constructed to include 1,037 rooms covering 14 stories.  This structure is quite unique among Masonic buildings because it was constructed to house all of the various Masonic bodies within its walls.

The Detroit Masonic Temple is approximately twelve million cubic feet of space, making it the largest and most complex building of its kind in the world.

Annual Dues


To remain a member in good standing, each year we are required to pay dues to pay for miscellaneous expenses such as rent, office supplies, newsletters, phone etc.  The current dues payment is $85 per Sir Knight.
